Root's Second Coming as Captain Starts in Style as England Bury Pakistan Without Stokes

Root Delivers Without His Talisman

Joe Root's second spell as England Test captain could hardly have started better. With Ben Stokes missing from the side entirely, doubts swirled over whether England could maintain their attacking edge against Pakistan. Those doubts were answered emphatically as England dominated the first Test, with Harry Brook making Pakistan pay dearly for a dropped catch on his way to piling on the runs.

Root had been here before, of course, and the pressure of a second tenure carries its own weight. Sky Sports framed it plainly: victories are vital, especially with Stokes absent and the team needing to prove it can win without its most influential all-rounder pulling the strings. Judging by the first Test, Root's men have answered that question in emphatic fashion.

Why This Matters

England without Stokes is a different beast, and there has been plenty of scepticism about how the side functions when their talismanic captain-in-waiting isn't available. Root stepping back into the leadership role for this series was always going to be scrutinised heavily, given how his first stint ended and how thoroughly Stokes has redefined England's Test cricket since taking over. A dominant opening performance, built on Brook capitalising ruthlessly after Pakistan shelled a chance, is exactly the statement Root needed.

For Pakistan, this is a familiar and uncomfortable story. Their bowling has been under fire, with Babar Azam facing fresh criticism over the team's pace decline and accusations that flatter, docile pitches have blunted their once-fearsome attack. A dropped catch turning into a match-defining Brook innings will only sharpen those questions about discipline in the field and up top with the ball.

What Happens Next

With England's dominance established early, the pressure now shifts squarely onto Pakistan to respond, both in this Test and in how they set up surfaces and select their bowling attack for the remainder of the series. Root's captaincy will continue to be judged series by series, but this was as encouraging a start as England could have hoped for without Stokes in the ranks. Expect scrutiny on Pakistan's team management and pitch preparation to intensify, while England will look to press home their advantage and give Root the winning start his second stint demanded.
