Fleming Snubs England: CSK Coach Turns Down Test Batting Role Ahead of 2027 Ashes

England's search for a new Test batting coach has hit an early snag, with Chennai Super Kings legend Stephen Fleming turning down the chance to take up the post, according to reports out of India. The move is a blow for the England and Wales Cricket Board, who will have viewed the former New Zealand captain as a marquee appointment with an eye firmly on the 2027 Ashes cycle.

Fleming, one of the most respected coaching minds in world cricket thanks to his long and successful stint guiding CSK in the IPL, was seen as an ideal fit to sharpen up a England batting unit that has had its ups and downs under the Bazball era. His tactical nous and reputation for developing top-order players made him an obvious target, but it appears he has decided his future lies elsewhere for now, with franchise cricket and his existing commitments likely factors in the decision.

The timing stings for England. With the Ashes down under just over two years away, head coach Brendon McCullum and the wider set-up will want continuity and clarity in the support staff well before that series comes into view. Losing out on a coach of Fleming's calibre means the ECB will need to go back to the drawing board, and speculation will now turn to who else might be in the frame.

Details remain thin beyond the rejection itself, and it is not yet clear who else has been approached or what timeline England are working to for filling the role. But the headline news is straightforward: one of the biggest names in coaching has said no, and England's Ashes preparations just got a little more complicated.
