Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo scored twice as Manchester United beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in a friendly at Strawberry Arena in Solna on Saturday. Mbeumo's goals either side of the hour turned the match after Atletico had taken an early lead through Arnau Ortiz.
The visitors dominated the opening exchanges and broke the deadlock inside five minutes. Koke threaded a pass through to Ortiz, who finished clinically to put Atletico ahead. Manchester United struggled to find rhythm in the first half, with Atletico's defence holding firm despite sustained pressure from the hosts.
The match remained tightly contested until the interval, with neither side creating clear-cut chances. Atletico's early advantage appeared to be holding, but Manchester United emerged with renewed purpose after the restart.
Mbeumo levelled matters in the 53rd minute, capitalising on a lapse in Atletico's defending to draw the sides level. The momentum had shifted noticeably towards Manchester United, who began to control possession and territory more effectively. Atletico, having started so brightly, found themselves under sustained pressure as the second half progressed.
Twenty minutes after his equaliser, Mbeumo struck again. His second goal, arriving in the 74th minute, proved decisive and gave Manchester United a lead they would not relinquish. The winger's clinical finishing exposed gaps in Atletico's backline that the Spanish side could not repair in the time remaining.
Ortiz's early strike had suggested Atletico might control proceedings, but Manchester United's superior fitness and intensity in the second half wore down their opponents. The visitors created little of note after their opening goal, with Koke unable to replicate the creativity he showed in setting up Ortiz. Atletico's midfield gradually lost its grip on the game as Manchester United's tempo increased.
The friendly served as useful preparation for both clubs ahead of the new season, though Manchester United will take greater satisfaction from the result. Mbeumo's performance, in particular, offered an encouraging sign of the attacking threat the hosts can pose. Atletico, despite the defeat, showed enough in the opening stages to suggest they remain a threat, though they will need to tighten their defensive shape if they are to compete at the highest level when competitive football resumes.
