The Firebirds have won two of their last six matches, with victories over Canterbury Kings bookending a difficult stretch. They beat Canterbury by 13 runs under the DLS Method, then thrashed them by 88 runs in the return fixture. Since then, the wins have dried up.

Otago Volts have proved particularly troublesome, beating Wellington twice - first by 5 wickets with two balls remaining, then again by 6 wickets with five balls left. Northern Brave also got the better of them, winning by 6 wickets with 22 balls unused. A narrow two-run loss to Central Stags completed a run of four defeats in five matches.

The pattern suggests Wellington can compete against Canterbury but struggle against stronger opposition. The margins of defeat to Otago and Northern Brave indicate they're either losing their way in the middle overs or failing to post competitive totals. The loss to Central Stags by just two runs hints at matches being decided by small details - a couple of runs with the bat, or a couple of wickets at crucial moments.

Wellington will need to tighten up considerably if they're to climb back into contention. The wins over Canterbury show they have the quality, but consistency remains elusive.
