UEFA, CONCACAF and AFC unite in World Cup boycott threat over FIFA's private equity plan

Football's continental powerhouses have escalated their revolt against FIFA's controversial private equity scheme for the 2026 World Cup, with UEFA, CONCACAF and the AFC now formally aligned in threatening a boycott of the tournament.

The three confederations have rejected FIFA's plan to bring in private investment partners, with UEFA vowing outright to boycott the competition if the proposal proceeds. The AFC has backed their European counterparts, whilst CONCACAF has similarly rejected the initiative, creating an unprecedented united front against FIFA president Gianni Infantino's vision.

The backlash has intensified following reports that Infantino's own adviser has quit over the plan, signalling internal fractures at FIFA headquarters. The organisation has attempted to defend the scheme, insisting "nobody is selling football," but the confederations remain unmoved.

JPMorgan's involvement in structuring the deal has also drawn scrutiny, with the investment bank now facing fresh reputational pressure after previous controversies in football finance.

The standoff represents an extraordinary challenge to Infantino's authority. With Europe's dominant confederation, the Asian Football Confederation and the North and Central American confederation all aligned against the proposal, FIFA faces the genuine prospect of a World Cup boycott by some of the world's strongest footballing nations. This would fundamentally undermine the tournament's credibility and commercial viability.

The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, is set to be the largest in history. A boycott by major confederations would be catastrophic for the event's integrity and FIFA's standing in global sport.
