Spain and Argentina to Clash for World Cup Glory

Spain's demolition of Belgium in the quarter-finals and their clinical 2-0 dismantling of France in the semi have set up a final that pits two very different paths to glory. Argentina scraped past Switzerland 3-1 in the quarters then edged England 2-1 in a semi-final that went to the wire. Sunday's showdown in 2026 will be the culmination of starkly contrasting campaigns.

Spain's flawless run

La Roja have not put a foot wrong. They beat Belgium 2-1, then suffocated France - a team that had every right to fancy their chances - with a 2-0 victory that left no room for debate. Spain's progression has been methodical, controlled, and utterly convincing. They have conceded only three goals across five matches and scored eight. That defensive solidity, married to their possession-based football, has made them look like the tournament's most complete side.

Argentina's survival instinct

Argentina have won ugly when needed and found ways through when it mattered. The 3-1 win over Switzerland suggested they could turn it on, but the 2-1 semi-final victory over England revealed a team that knows how to grind. They have not dominated as Spain have dominated, yet here they stand, two matches from immortality. That resilience will be tested to its absolute limit against opponents who have barely put a foot wrong all week.

The third-place story

England and France meet on Saturday for the bronze medal. Both arrived as semi-final contenders and both have now fallen short of the ultimate prize. France's 2-0 loss to Spain was a chastening experience for a side that had won their quarter-final. England's 2-1 defeat to Argentina was tighter, closer to the margins, but no less final. The third-place match offers both a chance to salvage something from their tournaments, though neither will want to be there.

The final, though, belongs to Spain and Argentina. One will be crowned world champions. The other will have come within touching distance and fallen short. Spain arrive as the favourites - their form has been too good to ignore. But Argentina have shown they can win when it counts. Sunday will tell us which quality matters more: perfection or nerve.
