Report: Spain vs Argentina

Spain break the deadlock in extra time

Spain won the World Cup final 1-0 against Argentina at MetLife Stadium, with Ferrán Torres settling a tense contest in the 106th minute. The breakthrough came when Nico Williams delivered a cross from the left that Torres finished decisively, handing Spain their second world title.

The match had remained goalless through 90 minutes of controlled but cautious football. Argentina set up in a 4-4-2 shape with Lionel Messi and Julián Álvarez leading the line, while Spain operated a 4-1-2-3 formation built around Rodri's control in midfield. Neither side created clear openings in normal time. Unai Simón was rarely troubled in the Spain goal, and Gonzalo Montiel's Argentina defence held firm despite Spain's patient build-up play through Dani Olmo and Fabián Ruiz.

The deadlock broke early in extra time. Williams, operating on Spain's left flank, drove forward and sent a cross into the box. Torres arrived at the back post to convert the chance, and the goal proved decisive. Argentina pushed for an equaliser in the remaining minutes but could not find a way through. Nicolás González and Ángel Di María's replacement worked the channels, yet Spain's back line of Pau Cubarsí Paredes, Aymeric Laporte, and Marc Cucurella held firm.

Spain's midfield dominance, anchored by Rodri with Olmo and Ruiz providing creativity, gradually wore Argentina down. Lamine Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal offered width and pressing intensity on the flanks. Argentina's midfield of Rodrigo De Paul, Enzo Fernández, and Alexis Mac Allister competed hard but could not sustain the tempo needed to break Spain's shape.

The final whistle confirmed Spain's coronation. They controlled possession throughout, managed the game's rhythm, and took their chance when it arrived. Argentina, seeking back-to-back World Cups, fell short despite Messi's presence and Álvarez's work rate up front. Lisandro Martínez and Cristian Romero's defensive partnership kept Spain at bay for 106 minutes, but one lapse proved fatal.

Spain's second World Cup crown came through methodical football rather than spectacle. They suffocated Argentina's attacking ambitions, waited for their moment, and struck when it mattered.
