England Claim Third Place in Miami Thriller

England finished the World Cup on a high with a 6-4 win over France in the third-place play-off at Hard Rock Stadium, securing their best tournament result since 1966. The victory hands Gareth Southgate's side a medal and a morale boost after their semi-final exit, while France leaves Miami empty-handed despite a spirited second-half comeback.

The match was a relentless attacking spectacle that bore little resemblance to a dead-rubber fixture. England dominated the opening exchanges and built a commanding 4-0 lead by half-time, with Declan Rice setting the tone inside three minutes. Rice's early goal sparked a run of three more in quick succession: Ezri Konsa finished Rice's cross on 18 minutes, then Bukayo Saka struck twice, first from Marcus Rashford's assist on 37 minutes and again from Eberechi Eze's pass just before the interval.

France emerged transformed after the break. Kylian Mbappe cut the deficit immediately with a 48th-minute finish, then Barcola made it 4-2 within six minutes. Mbappe's second on 66 minutes, again set up by Michael Olise, dragged France to within one. The momentum had swung decisively. England's defence, which had looked impregnable in the first half, was now under sustained pressure.

Saka's Late Steadiness

Saka restored England's two-goal cushion with his third of the night on 87 minutes, a crucial intervention that looked to have settled matters. But France refused to yield. Ousmane Dembele's finish in the 90th minute set up a frantic finale, and Jude Bellingham's goal in the dying seconds gave England breathing room they desperately needed. The final whistle came with France still pressing, having scored twice in the last five minutes alone.

This was a tournament that got away from England in the semi-final, yet they leave with tangible reward. The third-place finish is their highest since lifting the trophy 60 years ago. For France, the exit compounds the disappointment of their semi-final loss. They arrived in Miami as defending champions and depart with nothing.

The attacking quality on display, particularly in the first half from England and throughout the second from France, suggested both sides still had plenty to offer this tournament. England's willingness to play at pace and Mbappe's relentless threat kept the game open throughout. In the end, England's early control proved decisive, though they were made to work hard for it. This was no consolation prize collected with one eye on next season - it was a proper match, fiercely contested, and won by the side that held its nerve when it mattered most.
