Match Report

Argentina beat Switzerland 3-1 in a World Cup match at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, advancing past the Swiss with two goals in extra time to settle a contest that remained competitive until the final whistle.

Alexis Mac Allister gave Argentina the lead in the 10th minute, finishing a move set up by Lionel Messi. That early goal set the tone, but Switzerland refused to fold. The Swiss pressed hard throughout the first half and beyond, forcing Argentina to defend resolutely. Emiliano Martínez made several important saves to keep his side ahead.

Switzerland equalised in the 67th minute when Dan Ndoye converted a chance created by Ricardo Rodríguez. The goal breathed fresh life into the Swiss challenge and forced Argentina to recalibrate their approach. For long stretches of normal time, the match hung in the balance. Neither side could find a decisive second goal, and the contest went to extra time with the score locked at 1-1.

Argentina took control in the additional 30 minutes. Julián Alvarez restored their lead in the 112th minute with a finish set up by José Manuel López. That goal proved decisive. Lautaro Martínez added a third in the 120th minute to seal the result and send Argentina through.

The match was played at a high tempo throughout. Argentina's midfield - featuring Leandro Paredes, Rodrigo De Paul and Enzo Fernández - controlled possession for large periods, though Switzerland's Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler competed hard in the middle of the pitch. Messi's presence in the Argentina attack created space for others, most notably Mac Allister in the opening stages.

Switzerland's back line, marshalled by Nico Elvedi and Manuel Akanji, stood firm for most of the match. Gregor Kobel made saves when called upon, but could not prevent the two extra-time goals that ultimately cost his side the tie.

Key Performers

Mac Allister's early finish set Argentina on their way and proved the template for their victory - clinical finishing when opportunities arose. Messi's assist for that opening goal underlined his continued importance to Argentina's attacking play.

Ndoye's goal kept Switzerland in the contest and represented their main attacking threat throughout. Xhaka and Freuler worked tirelessly in midfield to disrupt Argentina's rhythm.

Alvarez and Martínez both found the net in extra time when Argentina needed them most, demonstrating their ability to deliver under pressure.

What It Means

Argentina progressed to the next round of the World Cup with a hard-fought victory. Switzerland's tournament ended in disappointment despite a spirited display that suggested they could compete with one of the tournament favourites. The Swiss will rue their inability to find a second goal during normal time, which might have changed the complexion of extra time.
