Pochettino commits to USMNT through 2030 World Cup

Mauricio Pochettino isn't going anywhere. The US Soccer Federation have announced a new contract for the USMNT head coach that runs through to the 2030 World Cup, ending any speculation over his future just as focus turns fully to next summer's tournament on home soil.

The Argentine took charge in 2024 with the explicit brief of getting the United States competitive on the biggest stage when they co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada. Results and performances since have been mixed enough to spark plenty of debate among American fans, but the federation's decision to extend him well beyond next summer, rather than wait and see how 2026 goes, is a significant statement of faith.

It also gives Pochettino rare long-term security in a job that has chewed up and spat out predecessors quickly when results dipped. Locking him in to 2030 suggests US Soccer see him as central not just to next year's home World Cup but to the next full cycle of the sport's growth in the country, including whatever comes after it.

For Pochettino personally, it's another twist in a coaching career that has taken in Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham, PSG and Chelsea, all without a major trophy to show for the near misses. The USMNT job was always a different kind of project, more about building a footballing identity and getting a golden generation of American talent firing together than chasing immediate silverware. This new deal tells him, and everyone else, that the federation is prepared to play the long game to get it right.

With the draw and build-up to 2026 dominating the conversation from here, expect scrutiny of team selection, tactics and results to only intensify. But for now, the man picking the side is guaranteed to be the same one for years to come.
