England's Second-Half Collapse Proves Costly in Miami
England's grip on the third-place playoff slipped away in the final twenty minutes at Hard Rock Stadium as France clawed back from 4-1 down to make it 4-4, only for the hosts to hold firm and snatch a 6-4 win.
England started explosively. Declan Rice opened the scoring after three minutes, then set up Eze Konsa's header fifteen minutes later. By half-time, after Bukayo Saka's brace either side of the interval - the second assisted by Eberechi Eze - England had built a commanding 4-1 lead.
France emerged from the break with purpose. Kylian Mbappe cut the deficit with a finish set up by Michael Olise in the 48th minute, then Ousmane Barcola made it 4-3 just six minutes later after Mbappe's assist. The momentum had shifted entirely.
Mbappe struck again in the 66th minute, his second goal also created by Olise, to level the match at 4-4. France sensed blood. For twenty minutes, England looked vulnerable.
But England found their composure. Saka restored their lead with his third goal in the 87th minute. France refused to go quietly. Ousmane Dembele, set up by Dayot Upamecano, levelled again in the 90th minute to make it 5-5.
In the final moments, Jude Bellingham scored the winner for England. It was a chaotic, high-scoring affair that swung decisively England's way only when it mattered most.
