Infantino Isolated: UEFA and Concacaf Turn on FIFA Chief Over World Cup Sell-Off Plan

Gianni Infantino is facing the sternest challenge yet to his grip on FIFA after UEFA and Concacaf publicly opposed his reported plan to sell a partial stake in the World Cup, forcing football's governing body into damage control mode.

FIFA moved quickly to issue a 'clarification' statement insisting that "nobody is selling football", but the denial has done little to calm the row. According to The New York Times, Infantino's future as FIFA president was openly questioned during meetings involving UEFA and Concacaf officials, with The Guardian reporting he has "lost UEFA's confidence" after being forced to scrap the sell-off idea altogether.

The political pressure is now spilling into the public domain. Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor and a prominent voice in English football circles, has branded Infantino the "wrong man" to lead FIFA, and that view is gaining traction among commentators. Writing in The Guardian, Nick Ames went further, arguing there can be "no letup" and that a "humiliated" Infantino must either stand down or be removed from his post.

The scale of the backlash, two of football's most powerful confederations effectively lining up against the man running the sport's global governing body, marks a serious escalation. Broader questions are also being asked about whether FIFA and the IOC need independent oversight of their commercial dealings altogether, a sign this is being framed as more than just a row over one scrapped proposal.

What happens next is unclear. FIFA insists the World Cup itself was never for sale, but the damage to Infantino's standing with his own member confederations looks harder to repair. Whether this becomes a genuine leadership crisis, or blows over once the immediate row fades, is the question now hanging over world football's governing body.
