Harry Kane Is Outscoring Everyone in Europe - So Why Isn't He the Ballon d'Or Favourite?

The numbers don't lie

Harry Kane is putting Europe's strikers to the sword. Reports out of Germany have the Bayern Munich captain dominating the continent's scoring charts by a distance that even his biggest admirers are struggling to compute, and it has reignited a debate that has followed him his entire career: is this finally the season Kane wins the Ballon d'Or?

Betting markets certainly think he has a shout. The Athletic reports Kane heads the current Ballon d'Or betting, with Lionel Messi and wonderkid Lamine Yamal the closest challengers. That is some company to be keeping. talkSPORT, though, is sounding a note of caution, suggesting Kane and Kylian Mbappe could yet be leapfrogged by whoever ends up lifting the Champions League, a trophy that has historically mattered more to voters than any individual golden boot.

Why this matters now

Kane's goalscoring exploits since leaving Tottenham for Bayern have never really been in question. He has broken records at a rate that borders on absurd. What has always eluded him is the game's biggest individual prize and the biggest team honours to go with it. A former Bayern star has already thrown cold water on the idea he can join Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at the very top of the sport, calling it a 'big ask' even with a bold 2030 World Cup prediction attached for the England captain.

That scepticism cuts to the heart of the Kane conversation. Individually he is unplayable domestically. Collectively, the trophies that separate the Ballon d'Or winners from the nearly-men, a Champions League, a World Cup, have so far stayed out of reach for both Kane and England. His semi-final World Cup exit still lingers, with team-mate Jude Bellingham among those who admitted to being 'gutted' by that defeat, and Kane himself has recently had to bat away suggestions of a rift with Bellingham over England's direction.

What happens next

The Ballon d'Or picture will not settle until the Champions League does. If Kane's Bayern go deep into the competition, or better still win it, his case becomes almost impossible to ignore given the goal return already on the board. If a rival wins the trophy instead, expect the narrative to swing hard back towards team success trumping individual brilliance, exactly as talkSPORT is already hinting.

For now, Kane sits top of the betting and top of the charts, chasing history in Bavaria while the football world waits to see whether prolific finally becomes decisive. Yamal, Mbappe and Messi are lurking, and this race is nowhere near finished.
