Harry Kane Is Ballon d'Or Favourite on Goals Alone, So Why Does Everyone Think He'll Lose?

Kane's numbers are silencing doubters, but not the doubts

Harry Kane is putting together arguably the most dominant scoring season of his career, and by some distance the best of anyone in Europe's top leagues right now. The Bayern Munich striker's output has been so far ahead of his rivals that it has pushed him to the head of the Ballon d'Or betting, with bookmakers and pundits alike installing him as the man to beat, above Lionel Messi and wonderkid Lamine Yamal.

That is a remarkable position for a player who spent a decade being told he would never win the game's biggest individual prize, largely because he never won the trophies to match his goal tallies. Now, at Bayern, he finally has the platform: Bundesliga titles, a squad built around him, and numbers that dwarf Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and everyone else chasing the golden boot conversation into a home World Cup year.

The catch: Champions League still decides everything

Here is the problem for Kane, and it is the same one that has followed him his entire career. Despite topping the scoring charts by a huge margin, several respected voices are tipping him to be beaten to the actual award by whoever wins the Champions League. Ballon d'Or voting has leaned heavily towards Champions League winners in recent years, and Kane has never won one, at Bayern or anywhere else. Individual brilliance without the biggest team trophy has cost strikers before, and the suggestion now is that it could cost Kane again, even in a year where his personal numbers are close to untouchable.

It all feeds into the wider England conversation too. Kane, as captain, has been fielding questions about dressing room unity and Jude Bellingham's role, brushing off talk of a divide within the squad ahead of a World Cup year in which comparisons to Messi and Ronaldo's legacy-defining tournaments are already being made. There is a growing sense that 2030, not 2026, may be the more realistic point at which Kane could finally land the elusive World Cup he has built his England career chasing, according to at least one former Bayern player's bold prediction.

What happens next

The Ballon d'Or picture will not clarify until the Champions League knockout stages take shape, since that is where the eventual winner's case is expected to be won or lost regardless of Kane's goal difference over the chasing pack. For now he leads the betting and the scoring charts by some margin, but the football world's message is consistent: goals alone may not be enough. Bayern's continued progress in Europe this season, then, matters just as much to Kane's Ballon d'Or hopes as anything he does in front of goal.
