European football in unprecedented World Cup boycott revolt over FIFA stake sale

European football's governing bodies have escalated their standoff with FIFA into an existential threat, with UEFA nations vowing to boycott the 2026 World Cup over Gianni Infantino's controversial plan to sell a private equity stake in the tournament.

The Athletic and New York Times report that UEFA has secured backing from confederations across Asia-Pacific and the Americas, with AFC, CONCACAF and Football Australia all rejecting FIFA's proposal. This represents an unprecedented coordinated challenge to world football's governing body.

FIFA has insisted it is "not selling football" and will proceed with a consultation process, but the scale of the rebellion suggests the organisation faces genuine pressure to abandon or substantially reshape the scheme. Reuters reports that Infantino's senior advisor Cordeiro has already resigned in the fallout.

JPMorgan's involvement in structuring the deal has drawn particular scrutiny, with the Financial Times noting the bank has walked into "another football firestorm" following previous controversies around the European Super League.

The boycott threat is the most serious challenge to FIFA's authority in recent memory. Unlike previous disputes over tournament formats or scheduling, this directly threatens the commercial viability of the World Cup itself - the organisation's primary revenue source. If major confederations follow through, the 2026 tournament in North America could be severely compromised.

FIFA's framing that it is merely seeking investment to "grow the game" has failed to convince stakeholders who view the move as a fundamental privatisation of football's flagship event. The consultation process now appears less a formality and more a genuine negotiation under duress.
