Ballon d'Or Alarm Bells: Why History Says Neither Kane Nor Mbappe Will Lift It
Harry Kane leads Europe's scoring charts by a mile, but a growing chorus of pundits reckon the Ballon d'Or could still slip away to whoever wins the Champions League instead.
A crowded race with an inconvenient precedent
Harry Kane might be topping the goal charts and heading the betting markets, but a fresh wave of pundit opinion is throwing serious doubt on his Ballon d'Or chances, and it is not really about his numbers. The argument doing the rounds is simple and brutal: the award has a habit of going to whoever wins the Champions League, and that is a box neither Kane nor Kylian Mbappe can currently tick.
That is the crux of the case being made against Bayern Munich's own top scorer despite him, by some distance, outscoring the rest of Europe's elite forwards this season. Lamine Yamal's name keeps cropping up too, with Barcelona's teenage sensation still very much part of the conversation alongside Mbappe and the long shadow of Lionel Messi, whose name is invoked in almost every comparison going.
Why it matters for Kane and Bayern
For Kane personally, this is about more than a shiny trophy. He has spent his career being measured against Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and a former Bayern player has already gone on record saying it is a big ask for him to emulate that pair's trophy-laden legacies. Winning the Bundesliga with Bayern and posting historic scoring numbers has clearly not been enough on its own in previous years when a Champions League winner has swept in and taken the individual prize instead.
That is the nervousness now creeping into the Bayern camp's narrative. Kane can put up the best goals return in Europe, but if Bayern do not go all the way in the Champions League, the football world's collective memory of who lifted the biggest club trophy in May could simply override the raw statistics when Ballon d'Or voters make their call.
Yamal and Mbappe muddy the water further
Yamal's emergence adds another complication. Barcelona's wonderkid is being talked up as a genuine contender in his own right, drawing constant comparisons to Messi's early years, while Mbappe's continued brilliance in front of goal keeps him firmly in the mix too. With three or four genuine contenders and no clear Champions League winner yet decided, the picture is as muddled as it has been in years.
What happens next
Nothing will be settled until European club football's season reaches its business end. Kane's job is straightforward on paper, keep scoring at his current outrageous rate and hope Bayern go deep in Europe. But the growing consensus among pundits is that goals alone, however remarkable, may not be enough if Bayern stumble in the Champions League while a rival lifts the trophy that has so often decided this award in the past.
