Qatar snatched a dramatic late equaliser to hold Switzerland to a 1-1 draw in their World Cup opener at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara on Saturday.
Switzerland struck first through Breel Embolo in the 17th minute, giving the Swiss an early grip on the contest. They controlled large spells of the first half and looked the sharper side in possession, but Qatar proved resilient in defence and gradually worked their way into the match.
The Qatari side grew into the game as the second half progressed, pressing higher and creating space in transition. Their persistence paid off in the 90th minute when Moisés Muheim levelled, denying Switzerland what would have been a valuable three points.
Both teams had chances to win it in the closing stages. Switzerland's attacking options - Embolo, Remo Vargas and Dan Ndoye - created problems down the flanks, but Qatar's back line held firm. The hosts pushed forward in search of a winner but found Gregor Kobel in the Swiss goal alert to any danger.
The draw leaves both sides with work to do in Group F. Switzerland's early dominance suggested they have the quality to compete, but they will be frustrated not to have converted that advantage into victory. Qatar, playing at altitude in California, showed character to haul themselves back into the contest and will take encouragement from their second-half display.
Embolo's opening goal gave Switzerland the platform they needed, and the forward remained a threat throughout. Vargas and Ndoye provided width and directness on the flanks that consistently troubled Qatar's full backs.
For Qatar, Muheim's equaliser was the standout moment, but the defensive work of Pedro Miguel and Boualem Khoukhi kept them in the match when Switzerland dominated possession. Alfredo Tapia and Jassem Gaber provided the midfield steel that allowed Qatar to weather the early pressure.
Kobel made several important saves for Switzerland, while Mohammed Abunada was called upon regularly by Qatar.
This was a competitive opening that suggests Group F will be tightly contested. Switzerland will feel they should have won, having controlled much of the match and taken an early lead. Qatar's comeback shows they cannot be written off, though they will need to improve their attacking efficiency if they are to progress.
Both teams now face crucial fixtures ahead, knowing that points will be at a premium in what looks to be an evenly matched group.
