Iran and New Zealand played out a pulsating 2-2 draw at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, leaving both sides with work to do in their World Cup campaign.
New Zealand struck first through E. Just in the seventh minute, capitalising on a C. Wood assist to catch Iran cold. The early goal set the tone for an open contest, but Iran equalised through R. Rezaeian in the 32nd minute to level matters before the interval.
The second half saw New Zealand regain the lead when Just doubled his tally in the 54th minute, again set up by Wood. The striker's clinical finishing looked to have put the All Whites in control, but Iran refused to wilt. M. Mohebi restored parity in the 64th minute with an assist from Rezaeian, forcing a stalemate that neither side could break.
Both teams created chances to win it. Iran's attack, spearheaded by M. Taremi and A. Yousefi, pressed hard in the closing stages but found M. Crocombe solid in the New Zealand goal. New Zealand's defence, marshalled by M. Boxall, held firm despite sustained pressure. L. Cacace and T. Payne worked tirelessly down the flanks for the All Whites, while Iran's M. Mohammadi and A. Yousefi provided width on their left.
The midfield battle was fierce. S. Ghoddos and S. Ezatolahi controlled possession for Iran at times, but New Zealand's J. Bell and M. Stamenic competed hard to disrupt the rhythm. C. McCowatt's industry in midfield kept the All Whites ticking over.
A. Beiranvand made several important saves for Iran, particularly in the second half when New Zealand pressed for a winner. The goalkeeper's distribution also helped Iran build attacks from the back.
E. Just was the standout attacker, scoring twice and constantly troubling Iran's defence with intelligent movement. His partnership with C. Wood worked effectively, with Wood providing the creative spark from wide areas.
For Iran, Rezaeian proved influential at both ends of the pitch, scoring once and setting up Mohebi's crucial leveller. M. Mohebi's finish was clinical when the chance arrived, while Taremi led the line with typical commitment despite limited service at times.
The draw leaves both teams on one point from their opening match. Iran will rue conceding twice to the same player and will need to tighten their defence in subsequent fixtures. New Zealand, despite twice taking the lead, will feel they should have closed out the win but will take encouragement from their attacking threat.
