Arsenal host Borussia Dortmund on Sunday afternoon in a pre-season friendly that will be the first meeting between the clubs since their Europa League quarter-final in 2024. That tie went to extra time in Spain before Dortmund won 3-2, a result that still sits with both camps as they prepare for the new campaign.
The fixture carries weight beyond typical summer warm-ups. Both sides are building towards serious competitive targets - Arsenal chasing Premier League consistency, Dortmund rebuilding after a disappointing Bundesliga season. A performance here will tell each manager something about where they stand.
The clubs have met sparingly in recent years. That 2024 Europa League encounter was tense and high-tempo, the kind of match that leaves a mark. Before that, their last competitive meetings came in the 2019-20 Europa League group stage, when Arsenal won both games. There is no deep rivalry here, but there is enough history to make Sunday more than a training exercise.
For Arsenal, hosting a German heavyweight at home in August is a chance to test their shape and intensity against a side that will press hard and transition quickly. Dortmund will arrive with similar intentions - to measure themselves against Premier League opposition and fine-tune their systems ahead of the Bundesliga restart.
Pre-season friendlies are rarely decisive, but when two established European clubs meet with recent history between them, the stakes feel different. Both will want to avoid the feeling of unfinished business.
