Kimi Antonelli is leading the 2025 F1 drivers' championship, with Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen among those trying to catch him.

Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes' highly rated rookie, has impressed in 2025 but he is not the championship leader; that fight has been dominated by McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

The framing

The headline suggests Antonelli is the man to beat in the 2025 F1 title race, with Hamilton and Verstappen cast as chasers trying to stop him. This is a striking claim because Antonelli only graduated to Formula One this season as a teenage rookie replacing Hamilton at Mercedes.

What the standings actually show

Through the bulk of the 2025 season, the title fight has been led overwhelmingly by McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, who have been the class of the field in the sport's fastest car. Max Verstappen has generally sat third, using Red Bull's improving pace to keep pressure on the McLarens, while Hamilton's first season at Ferrari has been solid but not title-challenging. Antonelli has had some superb weekends and podiums, marking him as one of the best rookie stories in years, but he has not led the drivers' standings at any point.

Why this matters

Presenting Antonelli as the man Hamilton and Verstappen need to "stop" significantly overstates his championship position. It conflates being a promising young talent having a strong debut season with actually leading the title race, which are very different things.

Verdict

The claim is misleading. Antonelli has been a breakout performer, but the real 2025 title fight has been contested at the front by Piastri and Norris, not by a scenario where Hamilton and Verstappen are trying to reel in Antonelli.
